Governance Skills
I have been involved in a number of non-profit boards and assisted with developing strategic plans and policies for many. Most recently, I spent six years on the Komen Tulsa affiliate board and was responsible for working with our executive director on strategic plans during difficult fundraising years. For the Tulsa chapter of PRSA, I have assisted in setting up several new procedures (i.e. E&O insurance for the board, investment policy for our funds). I have been responsible on multiple boards for identifying and setting priorities as well as monitoring programs to determine whether or not they have been effective.
Leadership Skills
I have spent numerous years on non-profit and PRSA boards at the local and regional level where I was called upon to provide strong leadership. Having strong leaders who can provide a representative voice for members or those who the organization serves is critical to solving problems and addressing issues for PRSA. Skills such as managing change, communicating effectively and building relationships are part of being a strong PR professional. Applying these same skills to working on PRSA's leadership team will be critically important to ensuring that the organizations strategic plan is implemented effectively and communicated clearly to membership. Listening to and understanding the trends and important issues affecting PRSA's professional membership will help as the organization moves forward.
Strengths
My strengths include integrity, patience, accountability and collaboration. I am a team player who works well at building consensus and unifying a board. I am a coach and motivator which has been exhibited well over the past 10 years as PRSA Tulsa's APR pool has grown significantly. I believe the combination of these skills are an asset to PRSA's board as well as the association as a whole.
Volunteer Commitment
I have been a dedicated volunteer to PRSA for nearly 20 years. In addition to leadership roles at the chapter, district and section levels, I have also volunteered my time for numerous non-profit organizations. I have learned how to manage the responsibilities of my job as well as these volunteer jobs in order to provide the best service to both groups. A mentor and former boss of mine taught me that my job as a professional is to give my fullest to my career and that includes professional associations. It is my responsibility to give back to my colleagues locally, regionally and nationally since I have learned so much from them through the years.
Position Statement #1
Prompt: The lines continue to blur among the disciplines of public relations, marketing, IT and customer service, and the need increases to create more collaborative teams and hybrid professionals. PRSA has continued to evolve and respond to these issues in support of our members, partners and colleagues. What do you believe are the strongest components of PRSA’s strategic plan that will help our members address these challenges, and how will PRSA remain relevant and sustainable for the future?
I believe the strongest point in the strategic plan to address these challenges is "Enhancing Professional Growth". Identifying trends and topics that impact the PR professional's day-to-day life and finding speakers who can share best practices that will allow each of us to become more adept at changing with the times is critically important. I believe this is a big part of what professional associations like PRSA can provide members. Ensuring that our members stay on top of their skills and become more strategic, ethical practitioners through professional growth is a foundational element for providing value to our members.
Position Statement # 2
Prompt: PRSA has become more complex and diverse in recent years. While the Society must become nimbler, we also are cognizant that we must help prepare our members to meet tomorrow’s challenges as leaders at every level. The role of the communications professional will continue to evolve, and PRSA will anticipate future trends, and support our members at every stage of their career. As a member of PRSA’s national board, what do you see as your role in contributing to helping our membership meet tomorrow’s challenges as leaders?
As a volunteer at the local, district and section level, I have worked diligently to help each of these groups expand the value that our members receive from the organization. I believe my role on the national board would be an extension of this. The national board provides the oversight of everything PRSA does. There are amazing programs and initiatives with each level of the organization that should be shared nationally so other chapters, districts and sections can improve. I want to help PRSA continue providing its members with valuable tools and resources that will help each member improve at their job and become better at providing strategic, ethical counsel.
